S Curl Pomade Review

s curl pomade

New School classic here from the same company out of Chicago that brings you the 360 Style pomade.  Now I don't think this is going to bring out any kind of waves with my hair type but I'm going to use it anyhow.  First off this stuff is cheap, 2$ a can so I like that.. and just cause it is doesn't mean it's not a quality product, some of my favorites ring in at the same price range.

s curl pomade review

Popping the top you see it's that golden translucent type of pomade, reminiscent of wave and groom or other similar products.  Smell is nice, not too heavy.. just smells like a mellow product scent, nothing really to compare it to but smells good.  You've probably smelled it in other peoples hair before and might recognize the scent.

Digging in it's nice and firm, put it in your palms to spread around and soften it up.  I like the pomades on the harder side for that solid all day hold without your shit drooping down.  Goes in quick and easy, I started with a little then added an extra dab.  Brushed it in evenly then combed it up.  Made my hairs nice and solid so they would stand up into place.

s curl pomade review

I don't have a whole lot of hair anymore but I imagine this would stack your shit high if you're going for a big pompadour.  Made mine real firm and pliable so there's a lot of flexibility, but for now all I'm looking for is it to whip up my style quick and easy and hold it there all day.  The S Curl did that with no problem.

s curl pomade

s curl wave control review

If you comb it up it's going to be nice and tight, or you can brush it or pick it out for something bigger or looser.. either way this stuff is going to hold good.  Re combs no problem too.  Didn't give me a lot of shine but the can says it would.. not a dealbreaker for me but if you like that high gloss you might need a dab of something else to shine it up.  Then again it might add shine for you cause it's supposed to.  Think this will work different depending on your hair type.  The can says to warm/dampen your hairs with a hot towel before applying but I always just put everything in dry.  That might help get your waves spinning if you do the hot towel, or dampen it and drop a wave cap on top.  But for what I'm looking for it seemed to do the trick.

Overall I'd say it's a definite for your arsenal, at 2$ why not grab some?  Super strong, firm hold for height and style ability, smells good, goes in and works easy, and it's going to last all day.  You can get it just about anywhere

Dax Green and Gold Review

dax green and gold review

Been wanting to test this out for awhile now..  Styling wax of the new millenium it says, sounds like some high tech business.  Looking at the ingredients it kind of is, you got the classic beeswax, jojoba, safflower, and olive oil for a nice natural blend.. plus some other things thrown into the mix.  Dax definitely knows what they're doing, I like how they always throw some extra shit in to make your hair how they put it, softer shinier conditions softens etc.. not that I care too much about all those things but it's the thought that counts, everyone likes added features right?  More bang for the buck, plus it seems with a lot of their products you can tell it works it's way into your hairs and does extra stuff that a lot of pomades don't throughout the day.  Enough of the smalltalk, time to get down.

dax green and gold review

Popping the hood you see some really interesting looking goop.. bright ass yellow with a mild, almost earthy, clean product smell.  Very nice, and somewhat intriguing.. it's so bright it looks like some hardcore shit, who knows what's going to happen, might be from outer space or something.

dax green and gold

Digging in this stuff is HARD, real hard.. which is good for me, I like the heavyweight products.  Scooped some out and realized after you break the surface that super shiny exterior disappears and you see it looks like a matte wax.  Cool again for me, looks like a winner so far.

I rubbed this dab into my palm with my fingertips and circled it out for a minute to try and soften it a bit  but it kept it's hardness, which I don't mind.. means it's gonna hold like a vice grip.  I put it in with no problem, applied with ease and combed it right through.  Got my style kicking real quick, had my hairs at full attention.

dax green and gold review

Boom bam bing, put it in, comb it up, out the door!  Looks like a winner to me, this stuff does what it's supposed to with no hassle.

dax green and gold review

Easy, real easy.. threw it in and with a couple quick strokes of the comb everything was in place.  Holds real tight too, extra firm.. like a wax should.

dax green and gold

I rocked it all night and not a thing dropped out of place, looked brand new hours after putting it in.  If anything does fall out, re combing is no problem.  Only I wouldn't try running your fingers through, but I don't really do that anyhow.  Overall this one gets top billing.. price is right at around $2.50 you can't lose, smell is very light if you're looking for a strong scent but it's still very nice.  Holds everything in place, let's you get as much or as little height as you want and keeps it tight all day.  Does give it a mostly matte finish if you're looking for the shiny slicked up look but I imagine a light top coat of something shinier would work fine with this product.  I love it, I'm a big fan of the extra hard and waxy, cement like products.. don't even mind the almost dry/matte look for a change up..  Looking forward to rocking this often.  Grab some if you see it or check out Dax online and see what they have to say

Rusk Warped Wax Review

This is a little off my beaten path, but I'll try anything.  When I was visiting my parents awhile back my Dad gave it to me cause he said they were out of his regular grease and had to get this instead.. ended up getting his regular stuff and passed this on to me.  Never heard of Rusk before so don't know much about the history so I'll get right in.

Looks pretty interesting, translucent blue waxy grease.  Really clean smell to it, like a shampoo or something but very nice though not too strong.

Dipping in it comes out easy, not too soft or light which I like.. has a bit of a waxy composition but not super strong and sticky like a straight beeswax or strong pomade would be.  Working it into my palms it feels like it will have a decent hold, spread around real easy and glides right into your hair.  I used a small amount and put some more in after..  Distributed evenly and combed up with no problem.

Got everything in place and sitting right pretty quick.. I noticed it gave my hair a bit of weight, not too bad but just didn't get my normal height.. but pretty damn close, maybe I should've stuck with the small amount I first had in.  I rocked it for half a day and it held well, again it's not as strong and sticky as some products, but will definitely do the trick.  Got back home and it still looked good, re combed back to the original specs.
Overall I'd say it's pretty good stuff here.. smell is really good, nice shine, works in smooth, styles up and holds it well, washes out fairly decent too.  By the looks of it I thought it was going to be a water based, but is not.  If you check around it starts around 3$ online for 1.8oz which isn't too bad.. again from the looks of it I thought it was going to be one of those 15$ cans of grease but you can get it for cheaper if you check around.  Worth a shot.

Murray's Edgewax Review

murrays edgewax review

I use the classic Murray's beeswax more than anything so when I heard there was some new space age water based beeswax product out, I was looking forward to trying it.  I love the wax for strong hold but  a water base is cool cause it doesn't build up crazy gunk in your hairs.  Sounds like a catch 22, water based wax but if anyone could do it, it's Murray's.  Now it's probably important to keep in mind this is designed to hold edges like it says.. the edges of women's hair that have tricky or slick and curly styles that need the sides plastered down.. or the edges of wigs, or their real hair pasted down underneath the wig so it doesn't pop out the side.  That's not going to stop me from using it as a pomade though.  The top says premium gel with beeswax, didn't hear about the gel part until I saw the label at the store but again.. there's no turning back now.

murrays edgewax

Popping the top it has a very clean light smell, nothing too strong.  Looks like a clear wax til you dig in and it feels like a super strong gel pomade.

murrays edgewax review

Comes out clear and a bit sticky, but like I said it's strong.. not what you'd expect by looking at it.  I worked it in my palms and got it in ok, but as soon as it hit my hairs I could tell it's unlike anything I'm used to.  It kind of sticks to your hairs and you have to try to get a decent amount in quick cause as it sticks I swear it puts up a shield that makes it tough to get more in.  It's the same with combing it too, you get about one shot to get it right.

murray's edgewax review

It combed up ok and I got my style in.. but it locks up your hair real tight and if you go back for a re comb it feels like you're breaking the seal or connections..

Start to get stragglers after a re comb..
Or if you mess with it too much all hell breaks loose!

Overall it gave my hair a nice dry look, which can be cool for a change.  The hold isn't that strong though, I had some fly aways from the wind but nothing too terrible or that maybe a pinch of regular wax to top might help out with.  It didn't flake like it says, but I'm just not used to the way it makes my hair feel either to run my fingers through or to try and comb it up.  I think this is the gel mixed in that does that.. probably a deal breaker for me.  I need something I can comb back in place all day and that holds good, but maybe with a little practice or a light top coat of straight beeswax I could learn to use it.  Not a bad product, I might experiment more with it..  Not an everyday one for me, but if you're used to gel this would be great for you.  Smell is pleasant, gave my hair a cool look, washed out really easy as soon as the water hits it, it's gone.. so that's a plus.  Price checks in between 4-5$ for 4oz.  If you're going for the dry look, have real short hair or want to hold your edges down give it a shot.

Royal Crown Pomade Review

Like the bucket says, an exclusive formula for men.. One of the classic staples of the pomade world, this stuff has been around forever and has reportedly been used by everyone from Johnny Cash to Elvis.  If it's good enough for the King right?  I've always seen it but have strayed away because it usually runs 4-5$ on a shelf filled with 2-3$ pomades that are calling out to me.. but you do get your moneys worth cause the can is big at 5oz compared to the usual 3oz.  The other thing that has turned me away in the past is that it just looks super light and soft, like it's not going to grip good.  But the one thing I can't deny is the smell!  My barber used some of this on me and I kept smelling it all day, smelled so damn good I had to grab some of my own.

Popping the top it looks like a light weight grease, and you get the really pleasant clean old fashioned scent.. but not old fashioned like the guy with way too much cheap aftershave on.

Dipping in it's about what you'd expect from looking at it, real light, almost wants to slide off your hands, super greasy and just slicks up your hands, not really any stickiness.  Because of this it goes in super smooth, doesn't grab any hairs or anything..  Got it in and combed it through quick and easy.  Here's where my problems began though.  As soon as I combed up a style it would just drop out of place and would not hold high like usual.

Probably from the ingredients or texture of the product, but I don't think it's a strong holder at all.  Then again it's not really designed to be.  For me I'm used to something strong and sticky that's going to but all my hairs in place and hold them there, Crown Royal is not the one for this.  Everything seemed to sag or fall out of postion as soon as I stopped combing.  Did manage to get something, but it was very loose.

Hmm, well I rocked it for the night and ended up putting a small dab of beeswax in and that did the trick immediately.  This stuff is probably good if your hair is curly or will hold it's style by itself and you need a little shine.. or if your hair is much longer.  Just don't think I have the hair type or proper cut for these kinds of pomade.  I can't see myself using it as a stand alone at all, but it makes a nice top coat for the smell and shine.  Also be careful to start with just a little bit because too much will end up weighing your hair down big time.  I've used it several times and it seems like less is always better.  It works ok if I have some residue of something stronger still hanging in my hairs or if I put a dab of wax in with it.  Still a classic and worth having in the closet.  Good for shine, scent, and if you've got thick, long or curly hair.. give it a shot.

Dax High and Tight Review

dax high and tight

Heard lots of good things about this so I wanted to give it a shot.  Been checking everywhere for awhile now.. came across some last year and after buying it saw there was an expiration date printed on the side for 2011 so watch out for that.  The places I talk to that do stock it say it goes pretty fast so that's saying something.. but watch out for the places that have had the same cans sitting around for 5 years.  There's a green can version that's for awesome shine, but I opted for the hold feature.. prob try the shine some other time.

dax high tight review

Getting into it, looks like a nice greasy, waxy, smelly product.. one you want to sink your fingers into.  The smell is a bit musky kind of like an old school aftershave or cologne.. you might think it smells like an old man but it's pretty good to me.  If you see it definitely give it the smell test cause it is kind of strong if you wear cologne or something it might try to fight with the scent, but it's growing on me.

dax high and tight

Digging in, it's nice and firm.. real sticky and waxy, which is a good indicator for that max hold.  I like a product that's on the harder side, not the stuff that will slide of your hand if you don't get it in quick..  that weak slimy shit won't hold your hairs up let alone last all day.  Butters up real good, worked a dab in my palms and slid it in with ease.  No problems at all, got it in without a fight and combed up real proper.  I like something you don't have to fight with or take 5 minutes trying to get it in and/or styled right.  The high and tight is just waiting to do it's job.. started at the back with a long comb and bing bam boom, great results.  I'm talking 3 minutes tops to get it in, style and out the door no fuss.

dax high and tight

Took these after I had it in about 3 hours and did a quick recomb, still looks brand new!

dax high tight review

dax high tight review

Put all my hairs in place, and held them strong all day long.  I lucked out and got it for 2.39$ but you can get it anywhere from 3-5$ and it's well worth it, a dab can go a long way.  Dax says there's lanolin, coconut and jojoba oil in there to shine, condition, nourish, moisturize, and soften your hair.  I say either way it's great.  It'll work with any hair type, mine is pretty straight but if you've got curls or rock a wave cap it should give you waves too.

I really dig this stuff.  I haven't been this happy with a new product maybe ever.  This might be my new go to, or at least a strong #2 to my regular daily choice.  If you like a waxy thick product that's going to go the distance, this is the one!  Track some down and grab a couple cans.  Price is right, smells good, goes in and styles superbly, holds like a vice grip and even washes out pretty good the next day.  Dax may have made the perfect product with the High and Tight.. just like the can says.. Bring your hair to attention and attention to your hair.  That's the truth!  you heard it here, now go get it

Dax Bees Wax Review

dax beeswax

I've tried a lot of different pomades and such, but always end up back at beeswax.  Everybody's got a thing and that's what does it for me..  Been using the Murray's beeswax for awhile now and always wanted to pick up the Dax version.  I tried to put my expectations aside and not compare it to what I'm used to.  I've heard good things about this one so figured it was time.

The smell here is a mix between a clean product scent and what you'd expect from a beeswax.  My girl said it was 'floral' smelling.. now I'm not trying to walk around with floral scented hair so I call it clean.  The Dax BeesWax isn't a straight shot product, they've mixed some royal jelly, mineral oil, petrolatum and some other things in there like Dax likes to do.  These things help soften your hair like the package says..

but the mix really softens up the product too.  Scooping in I'd say it's prob the lightest grease I've ever dealt with.. something you wouldn't expect from a wax.  Immediately this made me doubt it's sculpting/holding properties.. it's super light and comes out soft and slippery like melted butter.

It'll slide off your hands if you don't get it in quick.. but it does work in very smooth no problems there. I put in a decent amount then added some more on top of that.  Works in and styles up with ease.

Has a bit of a drier look which is cool if you're not going for the pound of product in my hair type of look.  Gave my hair a very nice healthy looking sheen, and really softened it up like the bottle says.  Big difference from the hardened crunch of some pomades.  But sometimes I kind of like that crunch, that's what keeps your shit in place throughout the day.

I tried it out a couple times and yesterday was a windy day and I'll say I can't really see myself using it much.  I need something I can trust is going to keep my shit straight and in place whether working 12 hour days, going to school or going out.  When I was out yesterday, I noticed peoples eyes I was talking to drifting to the top.. I thought that damn wind fucked me up, or maybe it was the wax and when I got back to my car sure enough things were floating all over the place.

You can get a nice style with this, but keeping in place is important

See how it wants to fall down on me?  Seems to hold the style very loosely.  This is just at home, wouldn't last 5 minutes in the street.  I don't want to talk too much shit about it so it is cool in some respects.. goes in and styles up easy, washes out real good the next day.. and leaves your hair soft after the wash or after putting some in.  But all in all this one's not for me.  Might be good if your hair is really short and you want a light grease, or if you want to soften up your dreadlocks or something.. maybe use it as a topper for something heavy.  So I'm sure it has it's place and I've heard of it working great for a lot of people.. and for less than 3$ at most stores it doesn't hurt much to give it a shot if you want.

Dax Vegetable Oil Shampoo

dax vegetable shampoo

No matter how much you like greasing up your hair, always looking for the right product or combinations of to get the slick back shiny hold all day oily perfection there always comes a time to clean the slate.  Got to face the music, the shit cakes up after awhile especially if you're using some serious stuff or have long hair.  Washing it just seems to cement it in more.. the water hits it and the product puts up the forcefield protection like fuck you I'm not going anywhere.  My girl always jokes with me when we go swimming, saying I'll swim across the pool and come up on the other side with all my hairs still in place.

There are various methods out there and some people say to use vegetable oil, Dax took this a step up for you with the shampoo here.  I usually use the Dax removing shampoo and conditioner but didn't have enough money on me to grab both bottles on the re up so I picked this up instead for something like 3$ I think.

Time to put it to work..  I used a very generous amount and shampooed the hell out of my hair for a couple minutes, rinsed and did it again.  I like the smell of this, I guess kind of like vegetable oil.. a bit earthy but clean like shampoo.  This one doesn't have a conditioner counter part so I tried conditioning with the Dax restoring conditioner, my regular conditioner, and none at all at different times.

It does cut into the product and get a decent amount out but not a whole lot more than regular shampoo.    Maybe I'm spoiled on the removing shampoo, but I don't think the vegetable oil stacks up to that.  Something I noticed is it leaves a bit of weight in your hair, not really a residue but it is oil your working with.  I use it at night after work and even after a regular wash in the morning there seems to be something lingering in my hair that wants to fight with my product.  I mean when I put product in the next day it doesn't behave quite the same as it normally would.  With that in mind I think it works better with some kind of conditioner after the oil wash to bring your hair back to life.  It's not terrible or even hugely noticeable it just seems the day after using it my hair is a little crunchier after I put in pomade or wax.

Regardless it's worth picking up for a couple bucks, got to keep a couple weapons in the degreasing arsenal.  I use it maybe once or twice a week to keep from getting too much product build up.  I just wouldn't use it in the morning or before going out because it is vegetable oil and although it cuts the grease out it still wraps around your hair and wants to stay in.  We all know that water and oil don't mix so this should be expected, just have to take that into account when using it.

The newer bottles have a red and white packaging, grab some at Dax online
or your local supply store.
